Post 146…Why do People Reject Jesus as their Lord

Why do people reject Jesus as their Savior and Lord? Even if you are now a Christian there was a time you most likely were not one.  Why didn’t you come to Jesus sooner?  We all have a reason why we hold out, but our soul would be much happier if we didn’t take so long in asking Jesus into our life.

Did you make excuses as to why you didn’t want Jesus in your life?  Maybe without even realizing it you did this, or you thought it possible that you liked your life as it was…even if it was filled with the world and sin.  Many people say they enjoy sin so they don’t want to stop doing what they are doing.  We have all heard the excuses people make in rejecting Jesus, but if they only understood what was going to happen at some point they would truly run to Him and ask Him to forgive them.

  1. They Don’t Believe In God: For me, I can’t say that was ever what I thought. For this wonderful lady when I was a child had told me all about Him.  She would take me to church with her.  She was a very special and sincere lady whom I so respected even as a small child.  However, there were many years I just didn’t get it.  Even without realizing it, I was rejecting the Lord.  He never rejected me, but I did Him and for that, I wasted many years of my relationship with Him.  I don’t want even five minutes ever to feel that way again.  I also want you to have the Lord in your life for He is so wonderful and in the relationship with Him no one else, no matter how much we love them, can take the Lord’s place.

  • Romans 1:20-21 ESV– For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
  • Hebrews 11:6 ESV– And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

  1. They Don’t Believe That Jesus Is The Only Way To Heaven: How many times have you heard this from people? You hear from politicians, movie stars, and even from many different churches out there that there are many ways to get to heaven…but they are lies.  The Bible is specific on this and to deny that won’t get you to heaven no matter what anyone says.  Many just are not going to believe the truth because they want to do and believe a lie rather than find out what God says on this subject.

  • John 14:6 ESV– Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
  • 1 Timothy 2:5-6 ESV– For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,

  1. They Don’t Believe in a Heaven or Hell: Oh, this one is a doozie. This one, I’d venture to say breaks the Lord’s heart for He came to give you life, to set you free, and forgive you so that you could go and be in heaven with Him one day.  Why don’t you believe in heaven or hell?  Even some Christians say this and they should know the truth on this subject.  If you call yourself a Christian and don’t believe in heaven or hell, where do you think you go when you die?  Do you think you just cease to exist or what? Oh, you will be in one of these places and I sure pray that you make the right choice because God is not the one who sends you to hell…it is you that does by your rejection of Him and not believing His word.  As you can see by just the next two verses God is declaring there is a heaven and there is a hell.  Choose wisely!

  • John 14:2-4 ESV– In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.
  • Revelations 21:8 ESV– But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.

  1. They Are Discouraged By The Behaviour of Hypocrites: Oh that hypocrite excuse. They say they don’t want to go to church because there are hypocrites there.  They would be right there are…but they are there, and they are learning about Jesus. That is surely more than the person sitting there and claiming that excuse as to why they are not going to go to church.  All people sin even those that go to church.  They are not perfect and not saying they are.  They are there to get their life right with God and that is not usually an overnight thing.  You learn and learn, and change things in your life.  Yes, there will be hypocrites in the church and everywhere else you go in life. Are you being a hypocrite making that excuse?  It is an excuse you know.  Every single person in the church is at a different place in their walk with God even if they have 10 people in one family going to church.  They all sin and fall short and then have to deal with God to get right with Him.  Don’t use this excuse as to why you are not going to church.

  • Matthew 6:1-4 ESV– “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. 2 “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
  • Matthew 15:7-9 ESV– You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said: 8 “‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; 9 in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.
  • Romans 2:3 ESV– Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who do such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God?

  1. They Love Their Sinful Lifestyle & They Don’t Want To Give It Up. This is one of the biggest excuses that people make. They want to sin; they don’t want to change even if not changing would cause them to go to hell.  A drug addict loves to get high, an alcoholic wants another drink, a person into porn wants to watch more and more of it, and the list is huge.  People don’t want to give up sin.  No matter what you sin is, lying, stealing, cheating, violence and so on….people don’t want to do what is right and think many of them make this excuse but they really don’t understand that no matter what sin you do…if you have not Jesus, and you have not confessed it to Him, and repented/changed direction then you are not on your way to heaven.

  • Galatians 5:18-22 ESV– But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
  • Romans 12:2 ESV– Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
  • Hebrews 11:25 ESV– Choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.

  1. They Follow A Different Religion / A Different Belief System: This happens to many people. They just go from religion to religion to see what suits them even if that is 100% wrong for them.  They follow people who might sound good and tell them what they want to hear…called tickling their ears, but don’t tell them the truth.  They are being deceived and don’t even understand that.  They want to hear lies a lot of the time because to know the truth and not do it…they know that is wrong, but if someone calls themselves a pastor/teacher, etc., they will believe them but somewhere inside them they know it is wrong. What needs to happen is that you pick up a Bible and actually read it so that you know if someone is lying to you or not.  Don’t add to it, or take away from it.  Don’t try to make it say whatever it is you want to believe.  God’s word is specific and doesn’t need even one word changed to appease you.

  • Exodus 20:3 ESV– “You shall have no other gods before Me.”
  • 1 Corinthians 10:20-22 ESV– No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. 22 Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?
  • 1 Timothy 4:1 ESV– Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons

  1. They Fear Persecution and They Are Afraid of the Gospel: Well, just about everyone I would venture to say doesn’t want to face persecution, but if we love the Lord then the opportunity to be persecuted is there. As for being afraid of the gospel…why?  You live in a fallen world that is totally filled with violence and hate.  What, in your mind, can be worse that just to live in this fallen world with all of its evil and yet say that you fear the gospel?  What part of the Bible do you really fear?  I’d fear more not having the Bible to go to in my times of struggles.  As for persecution, God said these following things:

Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.

Romans 12:17-21 ESV / 6 helpful votes

Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

“To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: ‘The words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands. “‘I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false. I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name’s sake, and you have not grown weary. But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. …

Revelation 1:1-20 ESV / 4 helpful votes

The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, who bore witness to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw. Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near. John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood …

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.

So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. …

In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. …

2 Corinthians 4:8-11 ESV / 4 helpful votes

We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.

Our hope for you is unshaken, for we know that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in our comfort. For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead.

  1. They Have A Deceived & False Perception of Christ: How do people perceive Jesus?  Many won’t accept Him no matter what you seem to say. To accept Jesus as their Lord would mean that something in their life would need to change.  Some think that how could anyone love this “man”.  First He is not just a man like when on earth to live and die for you, but He is God and your very soul rests in His hands.  What exactly did Jesus do to offend you?  What did He exactly do to you personally that you don’t want Him in your life?   Personally, I can’t tell you the depths that my Lord saved me from, or the love that fills my heart knowing Him personally.

  • Matthew 16:13-17 ESV– Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
  • 2 Corinthians 11:3-4 ESV– But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. 4 For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough.

  1. They Believe Their Personal Works Are Enough Without Christ. This is scary to me. Works won’t save you.  No matter how many works you do in your life if Jesus in not your Lord and Savior they still won’t get you into heaven.  We live by faith and after we are saved the works we do…we do in honor of God and not ourself.  By grace we have been saved through faith.  That is awesome.  Why would anyone not want that?  Why would anyone think that a good deed…or many good deeds done get you into heaven?  That is not what God says.  Works are great and we should do them…but do all your good works to honor God and not yourself.  Personally I want God every day of my life and don’t want to miss any relationship with Him.  Do you?

  • 1 John 5:12 ESV– Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
  • Ephesians 2:8-10 ESV– For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

  1. They Believe That They Themselves Are Gods: I know of some people who think that they are a god. However, I find that insane to even think that.  Can they created a universe, make a person, make earth and all the animals, fish, and birds?  Can they make a sun and a moon?  No, they can’t do any of that and to think they are important like god blows my mind.  Some think that when they die they become a god.  Do they even realize what they are claiming?  No…absolutely they don’t.  There is one God and He won’t ever share His glory with anyone.

  • Exodus 20:3 ESV– “You shall have no other gods before Me.”
  • Matthew 24:24 ESV– For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.
  • Matthew 24:5 ESV– For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray.

I sure hope that anyone reading this will never again reject the Lord Jesus.  I hope they will ask Jesus to come into their life and be their Lord.  No matter how far your life has fallen…God stands at the door and knocks.  He is calling you to go and open that door and let Him in.  However, He does not force Himself on you.  It has to be you who asks.  If I could ask Him into your life for you I sure would.  I hope this post helps you and if it does, please share it with someone else.

Now, may the God of Creation bless you, keep you, provide for you, give you answers when you need them, and may you find peace in Him.

God bless you.
